How to use technology for job search -

How to use technology for job search - One of my favorite things to do is answer questions from reporters about how job seekers and small business owners can use social media. I just found these notes I made when a The Wall Street Journal reporter  asked for my thoughts about using technology for job search, and I thought they were worth sharing! -What are some specific tips you have for folks looking to use technology social media to effectively find and land a job? The most important thing for people to remember is that social media and technology are best used to accomplish three things: 1. To demonstrate expertise. 2. To expand a network of people who know, like and trust you. 3. To learn new things. With that in mind, job seekers should identify the online networks best suited to their own skills. Are you a great talker, but not a good writer? Think about starting a podcast or online radio show. If youre great on video, use YouTube. If you can write well, blogging or networks such as Google+ or Twitter may be best for you. Once you consider your own skills, use search tools to find out where your colleagues who are online spend their time. If its feasible, you should build a presence on those same networks. Make a point to find and share information that will be helpful for your target audience. When you serve as a resource, people will appreciate having you in their networks. When you can impress people with your expertise and comments, youll win allies for your job search and potential referrals. Always think about how you can learn new things online. Ask questions, make comments and listen (read) as much as you talk (post/write). When you do, youll benefit more than you may expect. -What are some of the big mistakes you’ve seen folks make when looking for a job? One of the biggest mistakes job seekers make is they do not target their application materials and they fail to focus on networking, which is a known inroad to landing jobs. Another mistake? Job seekers dont go the extra mile on either end of the job search process. For example, they dont do enough research about companies to make sure they can create strong application materials. Or, when they land interviews, they dont make a point to study up about the organization and rehearse telling why they are a good fit for the job. Finally, many job seekers lose opportunities when they dont follow up after interviews with thank you notes or phone calls to indicate their strong interest. Job seekers should remember that employers want to find and hire good employees. Its up to the potential employees to make the strong case for hiring them! -What advice do you have for seniors (who may have less tech savvy) but are looking to land an encore job? The best advice is to get tech savvy. While ageism isnt a myth, there is research that says employers do value the experience and maturity senior job seekers may bring to the workforce. (Employers may also appreciate the fact that these older workers are less likely to have childcare issues or other distractions some younger workers face.) The key for older job seekers is to make sure their skills are relevant and useful. If they are not comfortable engaging in a video interview, for example, its a good idea to learn how to participate in one before an employer tries to set up such an assessment. Job seekers can get training at local colleges, community centers and from neighbors, younger family members and friends. Alternatively, for job seekers who are uninterested in technology, make sure to focus on positions where the lack of technology skills will not be a drawback. Unfortunately, those jobs are fewer and far between. Another suggestion: make a strong effort to ramp up in-person networking contacts. If a job seeker can make a personal connection with an insider with an organization, its more likely he or she will be able to get an interview and be able to make a case for a hire. -How can younger job seekers use technology to land a position (especially if they are say, recent graduates with fewer contacts)? Younger job seekers can take advantage of connecting with networking contacts by following thought leaders and potential mentors on any of the social networks, especially Twitter and Google+, which invite and encourage people to connect with people they dont already know. Young people can join in Groups on LinkedIn and ask good questions to show what they know and simultaneously learn something new. They should recognize that everyone they know can be a great networking contact. Dont underestimate your ability to engage and interact. Jump in to networks such as LinkedIn with both feet and take advantage of tools such as LinkedIns alumni feature to help connect with people who graduated from your alma mater: www.linkedin.com/college/alumni. Its important for   young people to own their expertise and to look for opportunities to connect with people who will both teach them new things as well as be open to learning from the young professionals. Be sure to take a look at The Wall Street Journal article.

Five steps to finding purpose in your work - TheJobNetwork

Five steps to finding purpose in your work - TheJobNetworkThere are millions of self-help posts about finding a sense of purpose at work. Most of them talk about the influence that purpose can have on ones health, motivation, and job satisfaction. Some articles try to advise you on how to find true meaning and purpose, but once you start applying their techniques, you realize that theyre not very realistic. googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) Thats because fruchtwein posts discuss the philosophical notions of self-esteem, self-confidence, purposeful life, and meaningful existence, but they fail on providing any concrete advice on how to achieve anything real.A couple of years ago, when I was trying to find purpose in my work by connecting with organizations, I stumbled upon Teach Me the Art of Small Steps by Antoine de Saint-Exupry. The French author wrote it during a challenging period and it spoke to a lot of my own struggles. So I decided to apply the art of small steps to finding purpose in my everyday work. Guess what? It worked. And here is how.1. Think smallSounds counterintuitive I know, but hear me out. I always assumed that your lifes purpose should be ground-breaking it should change the world and humanity. I missed the fact that purpose could be found in things like helping your coworker with a project, providing professional advice to your intern or keeping your colleagues level-headed during a stressful time.We always think of purpose as something vague and unattainable, but once we change our attitude towards it, it becomes entirely possible to find purpose in everyday tasks. Instead of setting ambitious goals all at once, try setting smaller goals one day at a time. Chipping away at smaller goals every day will allow you to feel more impactful.2. Its about the journey, not the destinationA lot of people think that purpose is a destination. We get there, we change, we order a glass of ros, and we chill. If this way of thinking applies to you, it is time for a personal paradigm shift. Purpose is about the journey where all the small steps that we make bring us one step closer to realizing our true passions.Once youve reached this proverbial destination, suddenly you lose interest. The journey is about discovering ourselves, discovering others and discovering life happening right in front of us. And remember that you are not alone in your quest (only 34% of US workers feel engaged at work).Finding purpose in your work is not going to happen overnight. It might take a couple of years. What matters most is for you to enjoy your every day and think of life as a journey.3. Play to your strengthsMost people who are having a hard time finding purpose in their work start to fix their weaknesses, as if thats where the problem lies. Recent studies show that people who know and use their strengths are more likely to find purpose in what they do and are usually more satisfied with their work.T his idea doesnt mean ignoring your weaknesses it only suggests to first know your strengths and utilize them first. I used HIGH5, a strengths finder that helped me explore my top five strengths and the ways to effectively use them at work.1 in every 3 individuals cant accurately name their strengths, so feel free to enlist the help of friends and family to pinpoint your best attributes. Once you start using your strengths, you will increase your confidence and be more likely to find purpose in your work.4. Stop thinking of purpose as a luxuryMany people think that purpose is a luxury that requires a lot of resources. This is one of the main reasons why people never succeed in finding purpose. If you think of something as being luxurious and reserved to a small group of people, you start to alienate yourself from the idea that its accessible to you. This makes it easier to lose motivation to even pursue purpose.Understanding that finding purpose does not require a lot of resources w ill help you find it more easily.Simplify it. Think of it as an artless act. Give it two minutes every day, and you will binnensee that anyone can achieve personal success.5. Match purpose with meaningYou will find purpose way easier if you match it with meaning. Ask yourself what you value most. Is it empathy? Is it collaboration? Maybe positive change?Lets say you value collaboration. Then try to find ways to collaborate more with your colleagues, other departments, or your clients. If you do something that holds meaning, it will undoubtedly light a fire in your belly and add meaning to your work. The desire for purposeful work is a modern human need. Its a continuous journey of finding what you like and applying it to your work by taking small steps every day. Once you discover your purpose, youll find the motivation needed to succeed in your everyday life.About the authorAnatoli Chernyaev is a content marketing manager born in Armenia and currently residing in Lyon, France. 5 Steps to Secure a sachverhalt Internship 5 Steps to Secure a Fall InternshipIts that time of year again. The dog days of summerwhen you have to start thinking about how you are going to get a schedule without class on Fridays andmore importantlyhow you are going to secure a Fall internship.Fall internships can be amazing for your resume and personal development. Having that experience shows that youre serious about pursuing your field. It also shows you have excellent time management skills. And its proof that youre able to do real work.Plus, because its during the school year, the competition is less stiffwhich is great for people without previous experience.Thats why were here to answer all your questions about how and when to start looking. Here at the WayUp Guide, weve come up with 5 easy steps to secure yourself an amazing Fall internship.1. Prime Your Resume. If you have an internship right now, be aya to add it to your resume and online profiles before applying. If you didnt h ave an internship over the summer, then you should have a compelling story about what you were doing. Think volunteer vacation in Costa Rica not acid trip at Outside Lands.Your WayUp profile is a great place to show off these types of non-internship experiences. If you made a funny YouTube series with your friends, you can add that to show experience with media. If you did any coding or freelance work, you can show off how you use your free time. Even if you got a bunch of great Instagram pics while traveling, you can integrate that into your profile (and refer to it as a travel blog). The less work experience you have, the more important it is to showcase the other parts of your life and personality that make you a great candidate.2.Get the Letter of Rec.And get your references lined up, tooStart looking at what companies youll be applying to for a Fall internship, and whether or not they require a letter of rec. If they do, ask your employer now if they would write you one, or if y ou can put them down as a reference. If theyre unsure what to write, give them atemplate. And if you dont have an employer or manager to ask, try emailing a professor or TA instead. Be sure to include any great stories from class or funny memories you have to remind them of who you actually are. Many companies will actually check your references. So, definitely be sure to ask your references in advance if you can put them down. You can also let them know what type of job youre applying for, so they can be sure to emphasize certain skills.3. Clean Up Your Social Media. Its easy to forget about what is appropriate to have on your Instagram and Twitter accounts during the summer. Be sure to delete or archive any inappropriate pictures or tweets before applying. You dont want to get rejected from a Fall internship simply because you were holding a bottle of tequila on the gram. Its best to keep your social accounts on private during the application period. However, if youre applying for a m arketing, writing, or social media-based position, then CLEAN IT UP. Youre actually being judged on it.4. Have a Clear Idea of Your Availability.fruchtwein students can take on about 15-20 hours of internship work a week with a normal course load. Thats the same commitment as a part-time job. Having held a part-time job during school in the past is actually a great way to demonstrate to employers that you could handle an internship. Balancing school and work can be trickyand no employer wants somebody who takes on more than they can handle.Be realistic about your workload and class schedule. You know (or can easily find out online) if that Shakespeare professor is gonna give you an essay every week or 20 hours of reading. Use ratemyprofessorsor ask around to find out ahead of time. The worst thing to do is to accept a job and then get overwhelmed and quit halfway through the semester. Factor in time for extracurriculars, midterms, friends, and finals, and let companies know ahead of time how long youll be gone for Thanksgiving and winter break.5. Apply Early. And oftenAlthough many companies continue accepting applications well into September, you should start applying ASAP. The internships that pay the best and look the best on your resume will close sooner than those that do not. Recruiters cannot always spare the time or resources to look at thousands of applications, so act fast. Now if your resume and WayUp profile is up to date and youre ready to apply, just search Fall Internshipsright here on WayUp and youll get opportunities tailored your skills, interests, and major.
